Peter van der Veer is Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen and Distinguished University Professor at Utrecht University. He also holds the Tata Chair at the Tata Institute for Social Sciences in Mumbai. He writes about religion and nationalism in India and China. Among his books are Gods on Earth (LSE Monographs 1988); Religious Nationalism (University of California Press 1984); Imperial Encounters (Princeton University Press 2002) and The Modern Spirit of Asia (Princeton University Press 2013, forthcoming). In 1993 he co-edited with Carol Breckenridge Orientalism and the Postcolonial Predicament (University of Pennsylvania Press).
